Analysis
Root Reserve—-San Francisco This game is all but a pick’em, but the Giants hold a big edge in the starting pitching matchup as well as boasting a significantly more well rounded offense. This gives us the chance to capitalize on some value, as while on the surface Webb and Hicks have similar numbers on the season, Webb holds a clear edge in terms of endurance as well as underlying stats. Webb is due for some significant positive regression as he holds a FIP more than a run lower than his ERA, which at 3.84 isn’t too shabby to begin with. Webb is the type of hurler who can shut down any batter, and if he can limit the damage to Edman, Goldschmidt, and Arenado, he will be in a prime spot to exploit the latter two thirds of the St. Louis batting order that has struggled in the early going. Hicks has nasty stuff, and the St. Louis bullpen has a number of weapons behind him, but given that they will likely need to cover a significant portion of the game, somewhere in the Giants’ deep lineup they will break through and give Webb enough to secure a victory. The Giants bats have piled up the third most runs in all of baseball and eventually one of the St. Louis pitchers will slip up and allow the Giants to take advantage of a mistake. Look for a 2021-quality outing from Webb and for the Giants to get enough to make his effort stand up - take the Giants.
